Paint Driers Manufacturing
Paint Driers:
Paint driers include naphthenates, octoates, linoleates, ets. of lead, cobalt, magnese, zinc and calcium . The function of paint driers is to quicken the drying of paint films. A combination of drier is quite often necessary to include the desired drying/ film forming characteristics. In fact paint drier are backbone of paint industries. All the paint drier are being manufactured in India, use of naphthenates and octoates being most common.
At present about twelve / thirteen companies are manufacturing paint drier in India. Since due to growth of paint industry and increase in use of paint drier will rise. So there is good scope for manufacturing paint driers.
Raw Material Requirement:
a. For lead naphthenates ( Basic I M T per day ).
1. Litharge 840 kgs.
2. Naphthenic acid. 1680 kgs.
b. For cobalt naphthenates ( Basic I M T per day ).
1. Naphthenic acid. 1150 kgs.
2. Cobalt sulphate. 1400 kgs.
3. Caustic soda. 200 kgs.
Manufacturing Process :
There are two methods for the commercial manufacturing paint drier: -
1. Fusion Process.
2. Double Decomposition Process
1. Fusion Process. : In fusion process a metallic oxide is reacted directly with naphthenic and water .
2. Double Decomposition Process: In double decomposition process, naphthenic acid is first of all neutralized with sodium hydroxide to form soap.
After neutralization a solution of salt of the required metal is added and double decomposition takes place. The strenght and viscosity are adjusted with the addition of white spirit.
Plant and machinery:
1. Stainless steel reactor with agitator and motor. 1 no.
2. Storage tank with acid proof brick lining. 1 no.
3. Intermediate tank with acid proof brick lining. 1 no.
4. Filter press stainless steel. 1 no.
5. Blending tank. 1no.
6. Mini boiler with 100 kgs. steam/hour.
