Tartaric Acid Manufacturing Unit.

Tartaric Acid Manufacturing Unit.

Introduction :

Large quantities  of tartaric acid and its salts are consumed nowadays in the production of great variety of feed and drugs. Structurally tartaric acid contains tow hydroxyl and two carboxyl group attached to an ethane hydrocarbon system, processing two centres of a symmetry. It therefore exists in four different modification, namely :
Dextro- tartaric acid, Leavo tartaric acid, racemic tartaric acid, and meso tartaric acid.

Only dextro from occurs normally in nature. Tartaric acid is colour less in the from of white transparent crystals. It is odourless , having acidic taste. It is soluble in water, alcohol and ether.
It is obtained in different grades like technical, crystalline, powder, and granular. in is used in various induatries like, ceramic, textile, in silvering mirrors, in colouring metals, as a sequestrant.
Others applications include in baking powder, fruit esters, beverages, galvano plastic etc.

 Market position :

There are no large manufacturing units of tartaric acid in India. A few small unit are manufacturing tartaric acid in relatively smaller qualities. The significant amount of tartaric acid are improve in India every year from countries such as France , Germany, Spain, U.K.

Requirement Raw Materials :

                   1. Maleic anhydride            360 Kgs.
                   2. Hydrogen peroxide         425 Kgs.
                   3. Tungston oxide.              30/40 Kgs.

 Manufacturing Process :

Tartaric acid produced from maleic anhydride.  Maleic anhydride is dissolved in rubber lines mild steel dissolver to give meleic acid solution of about 40% in maleic acid.  Epoxy succinic acid is produced from this solution in a stainless steel reaction after carrying out the reaction at a temperature of 70 digri C in presence of a suitable epoxidizing catalyst over a period of six hours.
The temperature of the reaction mixture in the reactor is gradually increased to the boiling point and hydrolysis is done for a period of one hour to break epoxy pompound  to from tartaric acid. The mixture is cooled to room temperature by water circulation and transported to a jacketted stainless still crystallizer where it cool to 50 digri C by chilled water withen few hours. The separated crystal are centrifuged, washed with a little cold water and dried. The mother liquor obtained is transported back to the system. After running three batches in succession, the tartaric acid in the end mother liquor is precipitated as calcium tartarate by calcium carbonate. This is filtered by centrifugation, washed with water. Both the products are to be dried at 110 digri C in tray driers.
