ALUM – ALUMINIUM SULPHATE.

Introducing :

       The manufacture of alum entails just one step addissional to the alluminium sulphate process. A true alum is a double sulphate of  alluminium or cromium and a monovalent metal. It is soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol.It usually available in three grades, namely technical , pure and analytical reagent grade. Alum are use in water treament plant, sizing of paper, as a modern in dyeing, as decolourizer and de- odorizer in petrolium refinery process.

Market Position :

           Alum is one of the most inportant industrial heavy chemical.The largest consumption of Aluminium sulphate is in a water purification. Its clarifing action is attributed to Aluminium hydroxide formation by hydrolysis. In medicine Aluminium sulphate is used as an stringent and antiseptic. With the raid consumption of alum by serveral industries there wood be a shortage of Aluminium sulphate. Alum is an great export potentail also in the neighbouring Countries.

Requirement raw materials :

1.       Bauxite ore         75%                               325 KG.

2.       Sulphuric acid     98%                               450 KG.

3.       Blake ash              70%                               810 KG.

4.       Flake glue                                                        1 KG.

Process of manufacturing :

             Practically all Alums Aluminium sulphate are now made from bauxite dy reaction with sulphuric acid. The bauxite is crushesd to a fine powder until 80% passes trough 200 – mesh ; next it is conveyed to storage bins.  The reactants are thoroughly mixed and heated with the aid of agitators and live stream in lead linced steels tanks. These reactors are operated in searis. In the last recator , barium sulphate is added in the from of black ass to reduce ferric sulphate to the ferrous and to peprecipitate the iron. The mixture from the reactoc is sent through a series of thickness, operated counter currently , which remove undissolved matter and throughly wash the weste to that when discarded, it will contain practically no steam coiled heated evaporator from 35 digri to 59 digri or 69 Be. The concentrate liquor is poured into flat pans, where it is cooled and completely solidified. The solid cake is broken and ground to size for despatch in fiberdrums. Bags. Iron free Aluminium sulphate may be produced by purification of commercial Aluminium sulphate and crystallizing from alcohol solution.

Plant and machinery :

The equipment required for a small scale plant :

1.       Reaction vessel fitted with agitator and motor        1 no.

             Mixing tank, storage tank and washing tank.          6 nos.

3.       Evaporator mild steel with jacket                           1 no.

4.       Sulphuric acid storage tank.                                   1 no.

5.       Mini boiler.                                                            1 no.

6.       Jaw crusher with 10 H.P motor.                             1 no.
